Why should this person be nominated? (What makes nominee unique; why should they be selected the winner of this category?
Sherry Geyer is passionate for seniors. She serves as the Tustin Area Senior Center Adivosry Board Chairperson and has been active on the Board for ten years. She volunteers at just about everything the Center participates in such as Casino Night, Pasta Fest, Tustin Street Fair and the Senior Dental Clinic. Sherry alos serves on the SAB Ways and Means Committee which recently raised over $300,000 to rebuild a state-of-the-art Commerical Kitchen at the Senior Center which serves meals through SeniorServ. She is active, a great leader to her peers and staff, energetic and forward thinking about preparing for the Senior Tsunami.
Sherry has served as vice chair of the Executive Board of SCAC (Senior Citizens Advisory Council). She also currently serves on a sub committee with Office on Aging Health and Nutrition. When Sherry is not volunteering she consults as an administrator of Kaiser Permanenente Orange County Hospice and Palliative Care. She has spent a career in Hospice and continues to contribute to aiding those at the end of life.
At the Senior Center, Sherry helps staff as well with seniors in need of Hospice and referral. She has been a rock as key volunteers have passed in helping staff cope and understand the process. Sherry is always on hand helping with the over 130 senior volunteers and a leader in new ideas for the Center and Board to engage in.
This year she help lead the Senor Center in its first Alzheimer's Walk of Orange County and our team "Remember Tustin," had the highest amount of monety raised in Tustin!
A 45 year resident of Tustin, Sherry and her husband John raised two children and now enjoy their two grandchildren. Her daughter, Stacey also volunteers at our events to support senors. It's all in the family!
What is this nominee’s involvement in senior care or senior issues
Sherry's dedication to senoirs is a part of her life, whether volunteering at her church, helping families in need of hospice and during her semi-retirement, dedicating the last ten years to the Senor Center. She also helps with children in need. For example, Sherry recently joined as a volunteer nurse this summer in Northern California for Camp Sunburst, a camp for children with HIV/AIDS.
Sherry inspires all of us to perform our best in serving seniors and her lifetime of volunteering deserves recognition. On behalf of the City of Tustin and the Senior Center, it is an honor to nomiate Sherry Geyer.
