Why should this person be nominated? (What makes nominee unique; why should they be selected the winner of this category?
It is with great pleasure that I nominate 89 year old Doris Ruth Weiss (better known as “Dori”) for the People’s Choice award this year. I met Dori in the spring of 2004 when I auditioned for a show she was creating and directing for the Primetime Players, a senior performance group based at one of the city’s senior centers in Long Beach. She welcomed me with open arms and made me feel right at home as the newcomer to this group, and through time pushed me toward fulfilling a lifelong dream of performing professionally.
In 1993, after the death of her husband, Dori was looking for something fulfilling to do with her time. Having been a lifelong performer as both a dancer and actor and the owner of a performing arts studio for many years, Dori decided to return to what she knew best – the performing arts. But this time, her students would be seniors looking to try something new or for something each had always wanted to do or those who wanted to return to performing. She created and directed a senior performing arts ensemble, “Oasis on Stage”. As word of the success of this group grew, she was asked to be the choreographer for a group in Hemet called “Seniors on Stage,” and she traveled to and from Hemet for 1 ½ years assisting in the growth of that performance group. Next came “Seniors on Stage” featuring performers from the Long Beach, Seal Beach and Huntington Beach areas. Then, in 2003, Dori was asked to become the artistic director of the PrimeTime Players based in Long Beach, a position she held until 2011, when she decided that her contribution to the group was simply “not up to her high standards.” In Dori’s mind, age and physical issues began to interfere with the high standards she demanded of herself. Members from Long Beach, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and surrounding areas have missed her. [ Dori can still be seen on reruns of the Colgate Comedy Hour, the George Burns Show, Archie Bunker’s Place and movies starring Donald O’Connor – she was his dance double!].
Her influence has been felt far beyond those of us who performed under her direction - something which was obvious on the faces of every senior in the audiences for which her groups have performed. They were always left with smiles on their faces!

I consider meeting Dori a wonderful stroke of luck. The audition I did for her opened up the world of performing to me once again after a hiatus of almost 35 years! She is supportive, encouraging, instructive and has helped me to believe in myself again! She has been that for so many of us who know her!
This actress, comedienne, choreographer, dance director and writer is deserving of this honor in recognition of her long years of service, support and encouragement to the many seniors who have been fortunate enough to work with and for her, for her lifelong commitment to the arts and for all the joy, smiles and laughter her efforts have brought forth on the faces of the thousands of audience members who have been fortunate enough to see her shows!
To this day, when I need help with a song and/or choreography, I call upon the talents of this 89 year old! She never fails me and is always current and up to date with her suggestions.
For all these reasons, it is my belief that Dori Weiss should be the People’s Choice! She is this Person’s Choice! Besides, how wonderful for a Senior to receive an award for her work which has impacted so many other seniors!
