John DeLap volunteers to help isolated homebound seniors with any needed household repairs that they may need to secure their safety. Even though he owns his own business, he is willing to come to seniors’ homes whenever it is most convenient for them. John is extremely skilled in carpentry and plumbing and is willing to spend as much time as needed to be certain that the repairs are exactly what should be done to complete the job and make everything safe and convenient for the seniors.
Describe how your Nominee has exceeded his or her Job Description, becoming a hero to you or others. Provide an example or as much detail as possible of the things that they do that go above and beyond their job description.
Just during the last few months, John has repaired the steps in front of a senior’s mobile home so that the Meals on Wheels drivers have safe access to the front door to deliver meals to the senior. Naomi, the 90 year old senior said, “If he had not fixed the step, the wonderful drivers that bring me my food and visit with me wouldn’t be able to get to my door. I would be totally alone and hungry.” Another senior asked for someone to take down a bookcase that was blocking access to the laundry room so the old washer could be removed and a new one installed. Not only did John break down the bookcase but removed it from the second story down to the garage at the back of the condo along with all the items that were on the bookcase. Upon seeing that the garage was extremely cluttered, he worked with the senior to remove and break down boxes and items that she no longer wanted. Another senior needed a kitchen sink faucet that was leaking disconnected and replaced with new under the sink hoses and connectors. John worked for several hours on his back making the connection and insuring that there was no leakage. Just recently a wheelchair bound senior needed ramps installed between his front door and patio and from the patio to the sidewalk. John installed the ramps at exactly the angle needed for the senior to easily go up and down the ramps. Wes, the senior, now has access out of his home and he said, “John made a big difference in my life. I can now get out of here, talk with my neighbors, and enjoy fresh air again. I have missed that so much since I can’t walk anymore.”
John is a hero to so many seniors, and I think he should be the “official” Volunteer hero!
