Samantha has been in the healthcare field for over 24 years, and has been the Director of Case Management at Los Alamitos Medical Center for 3 years. She has a true passion for helping others and making a difference in their lives. Her journey into healthcare started when she was a small child. At that time, she was in and out of the hospital often, and the nurses that she encountered made a big difference in her life. From that day forward, she knew she would be a nurse one day and that’s exactly what she did. She started her journey at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing. From there she became a med-surge nurse in her hometown at Roanoke-Chowen Hospital, followed by Bertie Memorial, where she worked in the Emergency Department and was a med-surge tech coordinator. Her journey into the world of Case Management started at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Her move west began shortly after when she became a traveling Case Manager landing herself at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Colorado as the lead Nurse Case Manager. Eventually she became the Manager of Case Management at Bakersfield Memorial and ultimately landed her first Director position at Los Alamitos. As if all that determination and personal growth was not enough to measure her success, presently Samantha is working on her Master’s Degree in Nursing Leadership and Business!
Describe how your Nominee has exceeded his or her Job Description, becoming a hero to you or others. Provide an example or as much detail as possible of the things that they do that go above and beyond their job description.
As you can see, Samantha puts 110% in everything she does and always goes the extra mile to help others. There are so many stories that show her dedication and drive, but one story in particular stands out. When she was working as an RN, she had a patient that would come in often due to his HIV. She became friends with him as she really enjoyed helping him. He always maintained a positive outlook on everything and wanted others to be happy as well. One time, she walked in while he was vomiting and got worried so she tried to help him right away but he wouldn’t let her until she had gloves on. The very last time he came in he had bed sores and was very dirty, not coherent, but in a lot of pain. She made sure to give him a bath and give him some pain meds right away. She knew he was nearing the end of his life. After she clocked out, she stayed with him because she didn’t want him to die alone. She ended up having to leave him for her next shift and he passed about 30 minutes after she left. She believes that he waited for her to leave before passing because they had built such a strong bond that he didn’t want her to go through that. This just shows a small fraction of how caring, dedicated, and hard-working Samantha is and continues to be day in and day out. She is driven to help others and has a true passion for her work. Her gift is in the compassion and love that she shows to each person that she serves.
