Alejandra Zaragoza

Position: Director of Activities

Why should this person be nominated? (What makes nominee unique; why should they be selected the winner of this category?
Alejandra is the Activities Director for La Habra Convalescent Hospital. She was a CNA for several years before coming to La Habra and has been here over 8 years. Her regular duties include planning all the activities for the long term residents, maintaining a room visit program for room-bound residents and being creative in keeping short term patients from being bored during their stay.

What is this nominee’s involvement in senior care or senior issues
Alejandra doesn’t know what “regular hours” means. She is often seen at the facility later at night and on weekends. She does things as simple as responding when a resident asked her for a Bible – she used her own money to purchase one for her, making sure it was large print, too. Every Christmas, Alejandra gives up more than one night of her own time to take small groups of residents to view the Christmas lights. More than one resident has mentioned how they hadn’t seen Christmas lights for years, and how it really helped bring the Christmas spirit into their heart again.
There is one particular resident that used to be an artist but is now living at the facility. She is unable to get her own art supplies and Alejandra doesn’t hesitate to go out with a list of necessary supplies and purchase them so that this resident can maintain her reason for being. Being able to continue to paint is the only thing that brings her joy now that she can’t live in her own home and do for herself. She is so thankful to Alejandra for her kindness. To this resident and many more, Alejandra’s actions are those of a sweet hero.
