Larry Hattem

Larry Hattem

Position: Patient-Family Advisor

Organization: St. Joseph Hospital

What role does your nominee have in senior care and senior care issues?
Larry lost his beloved wife, Joyce, after a drug reaction. He turned that pain into promotion of improved patient experience as a Patient-Family Advisor for St. Joseph Hospital. As a Patient-Family Advisor for the last ten years, Larry has volunteered countless hours to ensure the voice of seniors is heard.

Why should this person be nominated
Larry is an active young man in his mid-eighties. He plays volleyball twice a week in a coed all ages group, donates platelets regularly, sits with dying patients so they won’t die alone, participates on multiple hospital based performance improvement teams where a patient’s point of view is needed, and champions advanced directives and Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) by volunteering with local events at Senior Centers and libraries. Additionally, he has volunteered his time for speaking engagements with hospital staff to spread the use of Patient Family Advisors across the country.
Larry is an example of a thriving senior making a difference to his community.
