Tom is the Director of Transportation at Brookdale Anaheim Hills. He has worked there for three and a half years, and no one can imagine the place without him now. Tom is a natural for transportation – he’s a California native and knows his way around very well. He works 6 days a week, but when he’s not at work, he stays busy with his 8 children.
Describe how your Nominee has exceeded his or her Job Description, becoming a hero to you or others. Provide an example or as much detail as possible of the things that they do that go above and beyond their job description.
Tom brings Positive energy every day to everyone he meets. You know when he has arrived in the building because, as he is walking in the front doors, you can hear him greeting everyone he sees. His humor brightens the lives of the residents. You always see him laughing with them and asking them how they are doing. He enjoys having a men’s coffee and doughnut hour with his men’s group and sharing his collection of Navy artifacts when they get together.
One specific example of Tom’s generous spirit is when one of the residents was downsizing, and had no one to help her get rid of a lot of her items that would no longer fit in her new apartment. Now, remember, Tom already works 6 days a week, but he felt so badly for her that he took some time on his day off and hauled her extra things to the Goodwill, then returned to help her organize her room with the remaining items.
Tom’s positive words and his SMILE brings good feelings to all that have the joy in being around him. He doesn’t think of himself as “just the bus driver.” When asked what he likes about working at Brookdale he simply says, “Learning everyone’s story. We all have one and it should be celebrated. I am here for them and to make their life better.” He just wants to see them happy all the time!! He’s definitely a hero to everyone at Brookdale.
